Any music Playlist Recommendations for PE Class?
- All of our playlist are linked up HERE
- Artist we have been listening to currently:
- Students learn to move when the music is playing and they stop when the music stops.
- Music is critical for classroom management.
Did You Ever Have a Class with Behavior so bad you couldn’t control them?
- Give students and yourself grace. You never know what students are going through.
- Refer back to the rules and expectations we establish in class
Check out how we explain our Rules and Expectations above!
- Remind students that listening is a skill. You must practice being a good listener.
- We stress to students that following directions is a great way to be successful in life.
Check out our Podcast: How to Teach Kindergarten Students in PE Class
- You may need to modify your lesson, use less equipment, and progress students at a slower pace.
- If you have older students, you can refer those students back to a lesson intended for younger students to get them to understand how their behavior is affecting their learning.
- Find students who are doing what they are supposed to do and reward them. Change your default.
- Relate their behavior to real-life experiences.
- Sometimes you may need to scrap the current lesson and practice simply following directions. Reset the expectations.
Any Advice for Making Long Term Sub Plans?
- It depends on your situation. If you’re lucky, having a capable student teacher with the substitute as support can help you maintain the curriculum.
- Being PE certified is a plus but even more than that, knowing the sub can teach and manage students is more important.
- Be proactive. If you can, video yourself setting up the gym, lesson teaching, and how to close for the next day. You can create a QR code or send a link to the sub so they have a visual.
- If they have experience and are going to be subbing for a while, maybe try a structure unit like Throwing and Catching or Jump Rope.
Check out how we teaching Throwing and Catching and Jump Rope Here!
- Leave some slide shows with Animated GIF’s for the sub and students to follow.
Check out overview and preview of Animated GIF + Follow the Leader Resource Preview HERE!
- If you’re only going to be out for a day or so, then you may want the sub to play a tag game with some station activities.
Check out Tips for Stations in PE Class video for ideas on stations!
- If you have two PE teachers there and one of them are out, you can have the sub help with clerical work.
How do we keep the peace with co-workers who don’t share our passion?
- Give each other grace, because we don’t know everyone’s situation
- Try to focus on learning why they are the way they are and see what you can learn from them.
- Try to put yourself in a situation where you’re growing.
- That peace of mind is worth it then being stuck in a situation where you’re not happy.
- It’s a learning experience you can discuss with students. You may not like everyone but you have to work with them to be successful.
- In the end, you can’t control what other people do. So you have to make the best of the situation for yourself.
What is a good self or peer assessment for cooperative games?
- You can always try an informed assessment of cooperative skills with Cooperative Games.
Check out how we incorporate collaboration with Hula Hut Relays here!
- Have students reflect on how they performed during the cooperative games.
- You can have students watch how other teams are performing and they look for rubrics of good collaboration.
- Have students fill out a small note to give compliments or shout-outs to students who were great teammates.
Cross the River is a classic Teambuilding Game, check it out here!
- If the peer or self assessment is needed in the lesson, front load your expectations and schedule time for students to reflect at the end of the lesson.
- Check with the guidance counselors at your school for ideas on particular subject matter to discuss during reflection time.
Check out the Teaching Levels of Partner Acceptance video for tips!
- Have the vocabulary of peer and self assessment posted on display in the gym for students to see
How do you deal with students who always want to go to the nurse for minor things?
- No matter what approach you take (ask if they need to go, send them to the nurse, make tally marks), you want to document the procedure for future communication.
- For “frequent flyers” you can always go with the approach of “Do Your Best, and Forget the Rest”.
- If student choose not to participate, that’s fine, we just have the fill out the “On the Bench in PE” form
Check out our system for students who are injured, don’t wear the right shoes, or need to refocus!
- It’s also important to know your students, if they have a medical issue or something documented you will need to follow.
What does your class structure look like?
- Each lesson is structured:
- Warm Up
- Stretching – practicing Push Ups and Curl Ups
- Teaching the skill or game – students practicing
- Application Task – where students use the skill taught in a game-like situation
- Summative or Formative assessment of student performance
- Self Reflection as they leave
Check out our Daily Self -Assessment we do for students each class here!
- You take the lesson structure, combined with the unit (3 to 4 weeks), and you Scope and Sequence it with activities students can do around the community or at home.
Check out how we try to Scope and Sequence our curriculum here!
- Try to build into your lesson closure:
- Review – go over what you did in class that day
- Preview – look ahead to what is planned the next class
- Thank you – Thanking students for helping the class be successful
- Showing gratitude and showing you care can help to lead into buy in from other students
- Learn to add meaning to your lesson by slowing down the speed and pace. Quality over quantity.
