What’s Up Phys Ed Fam!
I hope you’re having a super fabulous day!
With this post I wanted to highlight a new resource we just published. This one has been on my to do list for a while, because I knew that I needed it in my own teaching environment. Also, I wanted to join the club with the other awesome PE Teachers I see posting their standards on the wall each week.
I’m pretty sure most folks are familiar with “I Can Statements”, but in case you’re not – they are basically Grade Level Outcomes or Standards that are rephrased into more kid friendly language and normally start with the phrase “I can” to help kids understand what the purpose of your lesson is that day.
I’ve been using these since we created them and I really like how they turned out and how easy it is to post my daily objectives.
You can see an overview in the video below:
As you can see from the video above, these are an easy way to save time writing on a board each day and for people who aren’t gifted with amazing handwriting like me they are way more fun to look at 🙂
After printing them out, I laminate them and then I post them to my white board using magnets so it’s easy to switch them out and reuse them each year when I reset and start over.
I usually limit my display to FOUR statements. I’ve found it’s difficult enough to cover even one. So to be realistic, I limit myself to four statements that are related to the lesson, but normally I will only focus and discuss one statement with each class.
Besides helping you be more clear with your students, it looks great and shows parents or administrators that you are actually teaching to specific standards just like every other subject area in the school…
Funny memes aside, I’ve found that the practice of posting these statements has also given my lessons more of a focus because it reminds me specifically what I want my students to be able to do by the end of the lesson that day.
So there you have it… after 13 years of teaching, I have finally found a system that works and will result in new standards being posted on my wall each lesson.
Another option is you can post them all at the same time and just refer to the ones you’re working on with your students during that particular lesson, I saw a fellow PE teacher do this recently and thought it looked pretty good

I wonder if I could use them in Canada?
Marcus says
Hey Genevieve!
You sure can! You could just link up the I Can Statements with the standards you’re teaching.
You could use the visuals for students so they have a goal to reach for in class.
KELDA DEPREZ says
Will you be adding Standard 6 and more ICAN statements?
Marcus says
Hey Kelda,
Thanks for reaching out!
As the standards are updated, we will continue to update our ICan statements!

I’ve bought the Printable I Can Statements and it showed up as a zip and won’t allow me to download and print. Help.
Marcus says
Hey Laura,
Since the I Can Statements are a Zip file, you’ll need to extract them to access the files.
A walkthrough of how to do that can be found at the link below:

I’m logged into my membership but every time I try to print out the I Can Statements it sends me to Teachers Pay Teachers. I can’t seem to find where to print them out although I’m logged in as a member when I search for it. But if I do find it in a search it still takes me to TPT where it wants me to buy them but I’m a member.

This is so aggravating. I buy them, download them, and then try to print them and cannot because they are not google drive friendly.
What the heck. Very frustrated.
Marcus Nellems says
Hey S,
Sorry about the issues.
Are you not able to print them directly from where you downloaded them?
