First Impressions
- Eye Contact
- Shaking Hands
- Good energy
- Actions speak louder than words
- Employers decided within the first 15 seconds whether they want to hire someone (It’s been said)
Dress to Impress
- Suit and Tie to show the eagerness for the opportunity
- Hair Cut
- Do Not check your phone during the interview
Resume
- Short and easy to read (1-page max)
- Employers use the resume for contact information
- Paperclip a wallet size photo of yourself to the resume so they have a face with the resume
- Maybe print of bright paper so your resume sticks out
Finding a PE Job
- Connecting with PE teachers in the district for insights
- Web sites are great but limited
- Connecting with teachers face to face or through social media (Job/Career Fairs)
- Talking to classroom teachers and administration
- “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”
- Be proactive and be the first one to know about the job posting
- Discuss the job opportunities with teachers already in the district (taking them to coffee
- Subbing at the school, or working the after-school programs
- Find out where you want to work don’t have to take the first offer given to you
- Asking reflective questions for interview team, seeing the previous years schedule, how many students are in the school/gym at a time, contact info from the previous teacher
- Social skills are important to display, whether they want you in the school dynamic
- Do something to stand out, passion, social skills, energy
Personal Interview Experience
- Resume on the state website
- Practice interviewing the build confidence and skills (take as many interviews as you can)
- Connect with as many teachers
- Provide the interview team with resources of your skills (resume, unit work sample, lesson plans, links to videos)
- Using the student teaching experience as a springboard for finding a job
- Bring the energy
- Asking them a self-reflection question about how YOU did in the interview lets them know you understand self-reflection is apart of teaching
- Bringing a portfolio of your teaching
- Be aware and ask for feedback
