Spot It Victory Lap – A Fun Icebreaker, Mixer or Instant Activity for PE Class
Looking for a simple activity that gets students moving, thinking, and having fun from the moment they walk into your gym?
Spot It Victory Lap is one of those activities that checks all the boxes. It’s easy to teach, requires very little equipment, gets every student engaged, and works great as an instant activity, brain break, or warm-up.
I’ll often use games like this at the beginning of the year because students can jump right in without any background knowledge or skills and it gives kids an opportunity to meet their classmates. The competitive element keeps everyone engaged, but because rounds are so quick, everyone gets plenty of opportunities to play.

How to Play Spot It Victory Lap
Let’s recap the rules for the activity…
Equipment Needed
- Spot It Cards (You can get a standard deck like this, or they have specialized decks like Animal Version or Sports Version if you want something different)
- (Optional) Place out 4 cones to create a running path for the “Victory Lap” (or just jog the perimeter line if your in a gym)
Setup
- Have each student get 1 card
- Designate a safe running route around the perimeter of your activity area.
How the Game Works
- Raise your Hand to signal that you are ready to play and need a partner
- First Introduce Yourself to your partner by saying “Hi, My name is… What’s Your Name?… Then say “nice to meet you”
- On the signal, “1, 2, 3 Flip” both players flip their cards over and search for the one matching symbol between the two cards.
- The first student to correctly identify the matching symbol wins the round.
- The players switch cards each game and give a fist bump or high five and say “Good Game”
- The winner immediately takes a quick Victory Lap around the designated course while the other student raises their hand and finds a new partner
- When the runner finishes their victory lap they find a new partner as well
- Continue playing for the allotted time.
Optional Variations
- Have students perform a different locomotor movement during their Victory Lap (skip, gallop, side shuffle, karaoke, etc.).
- Instead of running, challenge students to complete a choice of fitness movements before returning (bear crawl, squats, pushups, crab walk, hopping, etc.).
- Award points by placing a bucket of Fake Money or a token like Popsicle Sticks at the finish line for the Victory Lap and see who earns the most Victory Laps by the end.
Why I Love This Activity
One of my favorite things about this game is how naturally it combines movement with cognitive engagement and social interaction.
Students aren’t just running laps—they’re using their eyes, brain, and reaction time before earning the opportunity to move. The constant cycle of spotting, celebrating, and jumping right back into another round keeps the energy high without students spending time standing in lines.
Because every pair is playing at the same time, students stay active and engaged throughout the activity.
The game is a great way to reinforce important social skills like introducing yourself to someone new and using good sportsmanship
Closure
The main idea I like to remind students about after this game is that while we are all different and unique, just like the Spot It Cards, we also all have something in common if we take a chance to connect with each other we can discover what that is.
Skills Students Are Practicing
Although this game feels like pure fun, students are also developing several important skills:
- Visual scanning and observation
- Focus and concentration
- Reaction time
- Decision making under pressure
- Sportsmanship
- Social interaction with partners
- Cardiovascular endurance through repeated movement
It’s one of those activities where students don’t even realize how much they’re learning because they’re so busy having fun.
Great for Any Grade Level
One reason I keep coming back to Spot It Victory Lap is its flexibility for any age group (No reading skill required!) and the extremely easy setup
This game is great for:
- Instant Activities
- Warm-Ups
- Brain Breaks
- Indoor Recess
- Substitute Plans
- End-of-Class Reward Activities
